Baldi's Basics Online

Baldi's Basics starts as a cheerful 90s math game and turns into a chase the moment you get your first answer wrong. A smiling teacher, a schoolhouse full of doors and seven notebooks your friend left behind: that is the whole setup, and it is enough to keep a ruler slapping in your headphones until you reach the exit. On this page you can play Baldi's Basics online in its original form, right in your browser, and then move on to Baldi's Basics Plus, classic remasters, mods and fan games collected on the same site.

Playing Baldi's Basics Online
The player at the top of this page loads the original Baldi's Basics, so there is nothing to download and no launcher to set up. Press the full-screen button before your first run. The hallways all look alike, the school map lives only in your head, and a bigger picture makes it much easier to tell a doorway from a dead end when Baldi is already behind you.
Sound matters more than graphics here. Baldi hunts by noise, and you track him the same way: the slap of his ruler gets faster as he speeds up, and its direction tells you which corridor to avoid. Headphones turn that sound into a real early warning system.
The controls follow the usual first-person layout:
- WASD: walk through the halls.
- Mouse: look around and aim at doors, notebooks and items.
- Mouse buttons: open doors, pick up notebooks and items, and use what you are holding.
- Mouse wheel or number keys: switch between item slots.
- Shift: run while your stamina lasts.
- Spacebar: look behind you without turning around.
- Esc: pause the game.
The game is built for a keyboard and mouse, so a laptop or desktop gives the best result, including school Chromebooks that can open a normal browser tab.
Seven Notebooks and the Impossible Question
Your friend left seven notebooks scattered around the schoolhouse, and you have promised to bring them back. Each notebook opens the You Can Think Pad with three math problems. The first notebook is honest: three simple sums, and Baldi stays friendly as long as you get them right.
From the second notebook on, the third problem turns into a garbled string of numbers that has no correct answer. Whatever you type, it counts as wrong, and the first wrong answer is the moment Baldi grabs his ruler and starts walking. Every notebook you collect after that makes him faster, and every wrong answer pushes his speed up again.
Doors are the other half of the puzzle. Baldi hears every door you open, so a shortcut through a classroom can pull him straight to you. Walking through open hallways, saving your stamina and opening doors only when he is far away is how most clean runs look.
Collect the notebooks in a loop rather than zig-zagging across the map. Once you know the school, a planned route keeps Baldi behind you instead of between you and the next classroom.
Getting Out: The Four Exits
The seventh notebook changes everything. The school turns red, Baldi reaches his top speed and the job is no longer collecting but escaping. The schoolhouse has four exits, and only the last one you reach actually lets you out. The first three close the moment you touch them, so the escape becomes a race around the whole building.
This is where saved items pay off. An Energy Flavored Zesty Bar for one long sprint, a door lock behind you and a quick look back with the spacebar are often the difference between the win screen and the jumpscare. Players who burn every item in the early game usually reach the red phase with nothing left.
Who Roams the Schoolhouse
Baldi is the only character who ends your run, but the rest of the school makes sure he gets the chance. Knowing what each of them does is half the game, because the map is fixed and the same encounters repeat run after run.
- Principal of the Thing sends you to detention for running in the halls and other rule breaks, and the lost seconds give Baldi time to catch up.
- Playtime traps you in a jump rope game until you finish five jumps or cut the rope with Safety Scissors.
- It's a Bully blocks a hallway and only lets you pass if you hand over an item.
- Gotta Sweep leaves his closet now and then and sweeps everyone in his path down the corridor.
- Arts and Crafters hides quietly at first, but if you look at him while carrying all seven notebooks, he whisks you straight to Baldi.
- 1st Prize, added in a later update of the original, pushes you around the halls once he spots you.
Most of these characters returned in the sequel with new tricks. Their Plus versions are covered on our school staff and students and troublemakers pages.
Items in the Original School
Items sit in classrooms, the faculty rooms and the hallways, and you can carry only a few at a time. The Energy Flavored Zesty Bar refills stamina, BSODA sprays a wave that pushes anyone in front of you back down the hall, and the Yellow Door Lock seals a door so Baldi has to take the long way around. Principal's Keys open locked doors, Safety Scissors cut you free from Playtime and an Alarm Clock lures Baldi to a spot of your choice.
Quarters work in the vending machines and the payphone, and the tape played in the right machine stops Baldi from hearing for a short while. WD-NoSquee silences a squeaky door, and Big Ol' Boots stop Gotta Sweep and 1st Prize from pushing you around. None of these items is rare, but all of them are much more useful in the red escape phase than in the first two minutes.
Endless Mode and the Secret Ending
The main menu offers two ways to play. Story Mode is the classic run described above: seven notebooks, then the exits. Endless Mode keeps the school open forever, with notebooks respawning after you collect them, and the only question is how many you can grab before Baldi becomes too fast to escape. Because each wrong answer adds speed for the rest of the session, careful answers matter even more than running.
The original also hides a secret ending. Answer every one of the 21 problems wrong and still make it out, and the usual win screen is replaced by something much stranger: a distorted Baldi and a hidden character called Null. It is one of the most talked-about moments in the series, and the main reason many players replay the original long after they have beaten it.
From the Original to Baldi's Basics Plus
The 2018 game grew into a whole series. The main releases, in order, look like this:
- Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning, the original jam game with one fixed school and seven notebooks.
- Birthday Bash, a party-themed take on the same school with balloons and its own secret.
- Baldi's Basics Plus, the full game, in Early Access since June 12, 2020.
- Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered, released on October 21, 2022, bundling the original, Birthday Bash and the old Plus demo with new settings and extra endings.
Baldi's Basics Plus keeps the notebooks and the ruler but changes almost everything around them. Floors are generated from a seed, so the layout is different every run, and a full Hide & Seek run spans five floors, from school levels with time limits to Maintenance, Factory and Laboratory floors. Classrooms hold activities instead of a single quiz, the Pitstop between floors sells items for YTPs, and a growing cast of new characters joins the familiar faces. If you have just beaten the original, the Plus shelf is the natural next step.
Baldi's Basics Plus Guides
We wrote a full set of guides for the sequel, from the first floor to the last update. Good places to start:
- Getting Started: how a Plus run works, modes, lives and the first habits that keep Baldi slow.
- Hide & Seek Floors: time limits, notebook counts and the rules of Maintenance, Factory and Laboratory floors.
- Activities and Notebooks: how to solve the Math Machine, Balloon Buster and Match Machine without feeding Baldi's speed.
- Items and YTPs: every key item, how YTPs are earned and how stickers change a run.
- Pitstop Checklist: what to buy before each floor type.
You will also find field trips and Endless Mode, the full update history from 0.4 to 0.9 and 0.10 to 0.14, and the system requirements for the Steam version.

Questions Players Ask
Is Baldi's Basics free to play?
The original Baldi's Basics was released for free, and you can play it online on this page without paying or installing anything. Baldi's Basics Plus is a paid Early Access game on Steam, itch.io and Game Jolt; buying it there supports the developer.
Which version plays on this page?
The player runs the original Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning, the classic school with seven notebooks and four exits. Builds of the sequel are on the Baldi's Basics Plus shelf.
What is the difference between Baldi's Basics and Baldi's Basics Plus?
The original has one fixed school, seven notebooks and a short escape. Plus generates every floor from a seed, spans five floors in Hide & Seek, replaces the quiz with classroom activities and adds a shop, stickers, field trips and many new characters.
How do I get the secret ending?
Answer all 21 problems wrong, then escape the school as usual. Instead of the normal win screen, the game shows a hidden ending with a distorted Baldi and a character called Null.
Does Baldi's Basics work on a Chromebook or a school computer?
Yes, as long as the computer can open a normal browser tab with a keyboard and mouse. Touch screens are not a good fit, because the game needs mouse look and keyboard movement.
Is Baldi's Basics scary?
It has no gore, but it does rely on tension, loud sounds and a jumpscare when Baldi catches you. It is a parody of old educational games, so the scares come with plenty of absurd humor.
Baldi's Basics rewards players who listen before they run and who keep one item for the end. Hit the full-screen button, put on headphones and see whether you can find the real exit before the ruler catches up with you.
